Gandhi comments on the lack of any apparent manual training in the curriculum for the school Mr. Campbell has represented to him in some literature. Gandhi says: "My idea of good education is that there should be, with the training of the head, that of the hand and the heart side by side."

Fred Choteau Campbell, the youngest son of D.G. and America Cooley Campbell, was born in Shawnee, Kansas, in 1864. He attended Kansas University where he became a charter member of the Kansas University Athletic Association. After graduating, he taught school in Johnson County, Kansas.
